Duchy of Vonala | return
The Duchy of Vonala is an autonomous entity. Its duke or duchess is elected by the barons of each city under its sovereignty. If the duke is sovereign of another entity, the Duchy of Vonala will be a vassal of that entity. If not, it will be independent. Each baron has 1 vote per city they are baron of, regardless of the city size. The election does not end, and its results can change at any time.
Powers of the Duke
The power of the duke or duchess is limited to deciding legal tender and outlawed currencies, and declaring war. If a baron does not follow these policies, the duke can invade the baron's Vonalan cities and depose the baron upon military success. The duchy does not have its own army, as all the barons are expected to follow the decree of the duke or duchess. However, the duke can fund their own military. The duchy also does not have its own treasury or possessions.
Powers of Barons
The baron or princess of each city has mostly autonomous rule of their city. However, they must follow currency and diplomatic policies set by the duchy. If a baron is deposed by the duke, they are no longer allowed to be a candidate in elections unless the duke reinstates their privilege. However, they still retain voting power if they own property. This means that a baron can't invade a foreign entity on behalf of the city or the duchy, however, they are allowed to permit troops of foreign entities to utilize their city for travel, defense, or invasion, this includes foreign entities that the baron is sovereign over.
